Why use log mode?

- Hi there, I'm Robbie Carman. - And I'm Rich Harrington. - And Rich, this week we're going to be talking about log encoding for different video cameras and essentially what is log. - Yah, and this comes up all the time. We're seeing this being a popular option, and all sorts of crews are constantly asking me, well, should I use log, what's it good for? And I see editors struggling with it. And we'll explore the post-production more on a future episode. But Rob, what's the intent with log, right? - First, before I explain the intent, you need to know kinda where it came from. Log encoding originated with scanning motion picture film to video tape formats. And the people that were doing the color correction at the time used to be photo chemical-type people. They got their hands dirty with all the development, and once they started scanning film to video tape, very early on they realized that they were not getting the same level of flexibility with pushing and pulling on the image.
