- After you have a treatment that you are very happy with, the very next step is to sit down and put pen to paper and write the script. When you're producing and writing your own film, there are no limitations on your creative ambition. There's really no client hovering over your shoulder or a studio executive wading in with what you can and cannot do. Let your imagination run wild, but remember that every single scene you include will require more time and more money. So, it is wise to keep the script as lean as possible. It should go without saying that unless you can call in some serious favors, it is best to leave out all the explosions and car chases. The trick with creating a great short script is to create as much drama and emotion as quickly as possible. Unlike a longer piece, like a 90 minute film, you don't really have the luxury of taking your time to establish a character and slowly watch their emotional evolution or develop an intricate back story.
