The actor's perspective

- Sometimes, in making a movie, a cinematographer can lose awareness of the perspective of the actor. The first thing to realize is that the making of a movie is a very different experience for an actor than it is for a cinematographer. You may think our only goal is to get the actor to hit their marks in perfect timing so we can ensure critical focus, excellent composition, and coordinated movement with the camera. Even if the actor hits his marks and timing is perfect, there can still be a disconnect between what they're doing and what you are doing that can damage their work. For the actor who is truly in the moment, it may be that this place is no longer a set. This is his bedroom. There is no camera. There are no lights. No one is watching. He's talking to his wife, not just some actor he met a few weeks ago. It's reasonable that it's odd that there are these t-shaped marks on the floor that he's supposed to step on at a specific word.
