The chain of custody

- Who has your footage? That might sound like an obvious question. If you're a small production company, you've got a cinematographer, shoots the footage, takes it out of the camera and hands it to the editor, the editor edits it, and you're pretty much done with the process. If you'll remember at the beginning of this course, we recommended that you develop an expendable technique. Consider the possibility that you might have an extensive chain of custody of your material. For instance, the cinematographer shoots it, hands it to a camera assistant, camera assistant then hands that to a DIT, DIT then has to make multiple copies, if you'll remember one of the things I mentioned when we were talking to the script supervisor, we might mark some of the footage to go to an effects facility, some of it might to go to a title facility, some might go to a separate sound facility.
