Creating reference construction planes

- [Instructor] In this chapter, we're going to be working on the top tube of a bicycle frame. In this bicycle frame, the top tube is going to be perfectly straight tube. The reference for our tube is this top tube line that we created in chapter one. We're going to go ahead and create a construction plane perpendicular to this line so that we can build off of that construction plane for all of our reference geometry coming down the tube. This particular top tube is going to be a double butted tube. So the ends of the tube here and here will be the thickest points. We're then going to have that thickness travel down the tube, taper into the thinnest section of the tube which will be along the center, and then taper back to a thicker section to get to the end next to the seat tube. We're going to start designing this top tube with a construction plane that is perpendicular to the top tube line itself. We're going to go ahead and go to the construction tools and we're going to use the plane along path tool right here and we're going to go ahead and select our top tube line. Now this construction plane you can see here is perpendicular to the top tube itself and we can move this around wherever we want. In our particular case, we're going to want to start next to the seat tube, so we'll go all the way to the end, and give it a value here, a distance value of zero. And this is proportional, so if you wanted it to be in the center of the line, if you go to five, that would be the center. One would be the other end of the line. So we're just going to do that at five, that's the center, and then zero would be the start for us. Okay and there you go. You have your construction plane. Now off of this construction plane, we're going to go ahead and build our sketch geometry that will reference the outside of the tube and all of our construction geometry for the internal parts of this top tube is going to be referenced from this construction point.
