Generating data for 3D printing

- [Instructor] Additive manufacturing, also referred to as 3D printing, is changing the rules regarding design for manufacturing. The machinery that produces the parts typically have their own software to optimize creating the shape so the primary task Fusion 360 has to do is converting the model to an STL file. In Fusion 360 I have the remote door component open. Looking at it there are some complex surfaces which might be difficult to create using other methods especially in small quantities where it's not cost effective to create a mold. Therefore 3D printing is the perfect solution. To start a 3D print inside of Fusion 360 go to the Make pulldown, and select the 3D print icon. The 3D print dialog is very straightforward, requiring you to select the component that you want to print. I have the preview mesh option on, and at medium refinement I see that just over 18,000 triangles are calculated. I can change the refinement to high, medium, or low, or I can go to a custom refinement.…
