- [Instructor] Let's go ahead now and talk about open molding and the different types of manufacturing processes that are in open molding. First up is hand lay up. Now hand layup like its name implies is you taking your hands and laying the composite material into the mold. And you're applying the pressure to the composite material either using just your hand or with the aid of a tool like a roller that will help press the composite material into the mold and remove any voids that you can. Now, this is usually one of the most cost-effective ways to make something because you're not really using very many outside tools other than just the mold itself. So this is usually really quick to be able to get to manufacturing or to make a part. It also gives you a lot of flexibility.
