- [Instructor] One of engineering and design's most time-honored traditions is that of overbuilding. This can still be found today, where people design a component, it doesn't fail, and even though it might be the wrong material, or the less optimal material, or the wrong geometry, or more material than necessary, they'll continue to use the design because it doesn't fail. For people seeking to make the most of their material usage, or just optimize their design, a simulation type known as shape optimization can be very useful. Switching to the simulation workspace, we'll start a shape optimization study. Shape optimization is basically static stress analysis with the ability to take a look at the mesh of the component and offer a recommendation on what that mesh could look like and still perform to the specifications.
