- [Instructor] When you need to draw a selection in GIMP that's more complex than what the rectangle and ellipse select tools can give you, you might want to reach for the free select tool. It allows you to draw freehand shapes and polygonal shapes to make selections. Let's check it out. Here in our exercise file we have a whale's tail, and this whale tail would be pretty much impossible to select by drawing a bunch of rectangles and circles. So instead, I'm going to take the free select tool, sometimes called the lasso tool, and you can also get it by pressing the letter F on your keyboard, I'll zoom in a bit. And the free select tool functions in two ways. First, you can drag with it to make freehand selections. And as I drag, the selection follows my cursor wherever it goes. And when I get back to the point where I clicked, a yellow circle appears to tell me that if I release, the selection shape will be closed. I'll do that.
