How to avoid getting stuck in the interface
- Once you become familiar with the basic layout of GIMP's interface, with the locations of the tools, dialogues, and menus, you'll probably be able to go about your work without too much trouble, but there is one quirky behavior to watch out for and if you're not aware of it, it could make you think some features have stopped working. If you click in certain parts of the interface, your cursor will stay there until you click somewhere else and this temporarily disables other features. Fortunately, the fix is easy once you know it. Here's an example, I'll zoom in on the exercise file by pressing the plus key on my keyboard and then to pan around in the image I'll hold down the spacebar and move my cursor. Now let's say I wanted to hide one of the layers, I'll go to the layers dialog and click the visibility button for the boards layer. Now if I press the spacebar again it doesn't let me pan the image. Instead, each time I tap the spacebar it shows and hides the layer. So what's going…
