- [Instructor] Making games as an indie. There are few terms defined in as many ways as indie. In fact, indie can mean a whole lot of things. Back in 1993 when that term first gained tremendous popularity, the term indie referred to game developers working outside the traditional publisher-funded model. And that model is, the publisher gives developers money to produce a game, she and her team make the game, and then one the game is released, the developer earns the royalties. Nowadays, when someone says they're going indie, what they typically mean is that they're leaving the company that makes games and going to work for themselves. That's happening more and more every year. Developers want to keep their own intellectual property and want to avail themselves of the many new ways to distribute games, be it on mobile devices or through services like Steam.
