Mechanics of chance

- [Instructor] In this video, we're going to talk about the mechanics game designers use to integrate the role of chance in their games. Chance, a literal roll of the dice exist when some part of the game's outcome is left up to randomness. For instance, in some games, an object may have a range of effects, say, a healing potion that heals between 40 and 100 health points. Whether you get 40 or 100 or somewhere in the middle is left up to chance. We incorporate chance into our games for a wide variety of reasons. Most often, it's to prevent predictability and therefore, make the gameplay experience more enjoyable for players. If you know exactly how a game's going to turn out, if you know that you're always going to get 50 damage or something, you're unlikely to want to play the game.
