- [Instructor] If you're familiar with game design or if you're a hardcore gamer you've likely heard the term mechanics. A mechanic is the name we give to a particular rule or set of rules, which produce a particular outcome. For instance, let's think of a treasure chest. On the treasure chest there's a particular type of lock you must pick to open the chest. Spend a sec to think about a few different types of locks that you've encountered either in your own life or in a game. Now imagine another game designer saying to you, what type of mechanic are you thinking of for the lock? Of those you visualized, which one would you pick? For me I'd go with the one that requires a key, so my lock mechanic is a key. Whichever one you went with, that's your lock mechanic. To give you another example, think about different real world play styles for a moment. Rolling a ball around or running.
