- [Instructor] In this section of videos called Game Atoms, we'll be breaking down games into their smallest identifiable pieces much like scientists do with matter in the world. We do this to better understand a game's construction and ultimately its design. In this video, we'll specifically be focusing on the player in the game world. Now it goes without saying that we need players. This is fairly obvious of course. If we imagine a board game on a shelf, what we have there is a collection of rules, a board, and various pieces. But until we add players, we don't have much of a game. We only have the potential for one. Players are the final key ingredient. In game worlds, players are represented in a variety of ways. If we think of board games for a moment, players are often represented by game bits in the game world. We call game bits which represent players pawns or tokens. If you imagine a Monopoly board, the pawn on that board represents the player's position in the game world. In…
