- [Instructor] Type classification smooths out the differences between type designs, so that they fit into neat little groups. Even though it's the differences that make everything interesting. Nonetheless, the simplified system of type classification is meant to give a basic understanding of the evolution of type. It covers, roughly, the first 500 years of typography, starting in the late fifteenth century. There are five basic classifications of type. Old style, transitional, modern, modified modern, and sans serif. They correspond to key periods in the development of printing. Old style covers type face, roughly, from the late fifteenth century to the middle of the eighteenth century. Transitional covers a brief period, from the mid- to late eighteenth century. Modern spans from the late eighteenth century to early nineteenth century. Modified modern developed in the mid- to late nineteenth century. And finally, sans serif developed in the 20th century.
