- I have a challenge for you. Saw this layout a while back in the Harvard Business Review, it's an interesting piece, I'll get to that in a minute, but my friend was not fond of its design. It's done entirely with type, the face is obviously massive, it's dense, it feels more so because the counters have been removed, there are tiny stars that remain in the Ps, and she experienced that whole thing as overbearing, and just sort of clogged up. The dek hed is narrow and off center, it would have to be of course, because of the gutter, but it makes it an unstable base. And she wondered aloud if any of that represented the meaning of the story, which is about revolutionary ways of philanthropy. I will say I'm not as averse to the look as she is. The dek hed is an unsteady perch, but I also see that the headline bleeds three sides. So it's held in place like a vice, and doesn't tip. It is overbearing, but this makes me feel it.
