Bold moves

- You've heard me say before that one of the key markers between the new designer and the experienced designer is that the experienced designer is likelier to make bold moves. Things very big, very small, very tall, very narrow, very bold, very thin, over here, over there. And the beginner is likelier to even everything out. Similar sizes, evenly distributed, just kind of smooth. What got me thinking about this again, was the other day when I was at the mall I passed the Mac cosmetics store and saw their sign which looks like this. This is cool. It's pretty radical. Anyone could draw the letters. They're just simple lines. But this was not done by a beginner. Everything about it is bold. And by bold I mean gutsy. The name's very long, very thin stroke. How many typefaces could you have set the word Mac in that would look totally different? Times, Helvetica, maybe a script, something more ordinary.
