- Hey everybody, John McWade, senior author here at lynda.com. Hey next time you have comparative data to show don't just default to a standard chart, and think, "Gee, do I need to make this a bar chart, or a pie chart, or an area chart?" The way to start is to think first, "How would my viewer experience this information?" "Or how would my reader experience this information?" Then design to that. For example, I have this little bar chart here, and I know that none of you would make a chart that's this dull or this small, but what we're doing here is comparing two kinds of automotive headlights where one is 300% brighter than the other. And there are a couple of problems with this chart. Other than it's just dull, one of which is that we're illustrating length rather than light. Two is that the colors are meaningless.
