- Hi, everyone, John McWade. I was in Banana Republic a while back and on the counter next to the register, I saw this card: black, letter-size card on a simple cardboard stand advertising the company credit card. And I thought, what a beautifully simple thing. It's obvious what it is; the card is defined by a single white outline, low-key, good-looking; I thought, just a tasteful way to picture their credit card. And it was like, hmm, I wonder what else you can do with an outline? And it turns out, a lot, really. Let me show you a few possibilities. Nearly-identical concept, different subject. Bathroom restoration company in a clawfooted bathtub depicted in an outline, border on the page to match it, very nice. What's making this design work is that a lot of different elements are doing the same thing but in their own way. The type: small, old-style serif face Adobe Garamond gives it a slow, old-school air.
