How not to design for emotion
(upbeat music) - Sometimes understanding how to do something can come through understanding how not to do something. As designers, how do we typically show emotion in our work? It's usually on the facial expressions of the people in the images that we place into our designs. (light music) But, that's not always the most authentic way, is it? We wanna associate positivity with our brand, so we usually use all these very smiling, happy people regardless of the situation. Take these people for instance. Exercising, working out, doing what they should. But you'll notice, they're not smiling. Because working out is hard. Exercising is difficult, it should be. You're pushing your body beyond its comfort zone. Then why do we continue to see marketing for gyms or gym equipment with smiling, happy people working out? That's not authentic. That's not when they're happy. They're happy when they can fit into those jeans again. They're happy when they have enough energy to go home and play with…
