Linear fades

- As you've probably guessed by now, this chapter is focused on the line and just how important it is to identity design. Much as the fashion industry plays with the width of belts and collars and neckties, the design industry plays with its own set of fashion dictates to make sure it too is fresh. I've more than once reached into my closet for a jacket and had to scrutinize if the lapels were a bit too wide for me to wear with confidence. The width of a line in logos spent a good part of the last decade testing its limits to see just how thin it could actually get and still serve designers faithfully. You often hear me refer to the monoline aesthetic which is indicative of the single weight, relatively fine line that got its start describing the edge of a mark as opposed to the field. And since that successful run, the trend has been for the line to start thickening back out to the point it may be more about the line than it is about the space between the lines.
