Magazine layout triple threat

- Some friends of mine recently turned me onto the Anthropologie catalog and I like this a lot. It's monthly, it's small, it's thin. The outside is printed on uncoated stock. It really appeals to the print lover in me. And three things about this stood out. One is its beautiful and very low-key typography, two, the beauty of its photos, and three, the simplicity of its layout. All three have lessons that can be applied to almost any project. So let's take a look at them. Here's the cover. What I like about the cover is its very rich textures. It's all quite desaturated, there's nothing bright like fire engine red. Lots of grays, and browns and such here. The composition of this picture is striking with that open space running straight down the center of the page. And the type is extremely low-key. The name of the catalog, Anthropologie, is tiny, it's set in a typeface called Filosofia. It's kind of an old literary style and it conveys sort of that Ernest Hemingway kind of feel about…
