- A year and a half 'til the 1968 Olympics and the organizers in Mexico City are desperately preparing for the brightest world spotlight. But there was a problem. The organizers had yet to create an identity. No banners, no signage, no logos and very little hope. When Lance Wyman, a 29 year old designer, his new wife and a design partner arrive on one way tickets in the host city. A two week competitive arrangement would determine the new identity and exhausted with two days left, Lance sees something that no one else has really spotted. The bottom two rings of the Olympic logo served perfectly as the circles in the base of the numerals six and eight. A few more swings of the drafting compass and the nucleus of the 1968 Mexico City Olympic games had just been born. The sheer volume of work produced over the next 18 months was staggering. Lance was provided an excellent staff of artists and the concentric circles and lines that created the events aesthetic were not only of their time…
