- Some years ago, a mathematician and meteorologist named Edward Lorenz was working on a project in an attempt to forecast weather patterns. But in crunching his numbers, he discovered any attempt to round off numbers he was using would cause a dramatic shift in the outcome of his model. To explain the critical effect of this presumably insignificant action, he described how a butterfly flapping his wings in one part of the country, might actually lead to a tornado in another. The term coined to describe this was the butterfly effect. Now I like to assume that this same aspect of chaos theory actually applies to many things in our life that are imperceptibly related. The field of design is so reactive to the work of others, primarily because our industry is so immediately trackable. A designer in Australia that sells a new logo to a baker and then uploads the mark to LogoLounge or to the internet may have thousands of designers looking at and being influenced by this logo before the…
