Panoramic spacing

- Hi, everyone, John McWade. If you've seen my logo course, you've seen this before. Designer Karen Barranco designed this beautiful logo type for a high end kitchen boutique and a friend and I were talking about the tagline, specifically about how it's been spread across the page like this and why that's working. What message does the spacing make? Here's the same tagline spaced normally. Looks really tight, doesn't it? But this is default spacing. This is normal. Totally different effect. Small, detached, insignificant. You read it quickly. It looks nothing like what it says. But what is that? What are we doing when we spread out type like this? Well, a couple things. Physically, what the spacing does is slow you down. It does this by making the line longer by adding white. You've heard me say it before. The white space is visual silence so it quiets the setting. It also eliminates the graphical block we just saw so we're no longer looking at the words like an object that we have to…
