Photographing Type

Photographing Type

- [Nigel] Hi, I'm Nigel French. This week's Type Tip is a recommendation to photograph type. Type in our environment is a great source of inspiration. It might be faded or ghost type revealing layers of history. Of course, vintage type is extremely fashionable and it's not always easy to know which are the products of weathering and benign neglect and which have been consciously distressed. But really, it doesn't matter. The type you see may be ephemeral. You may be capturing a disappearing history. Its message may have taken on a different meaning with the passage of time or its meaning may be mysterious. Photographing type make you alert to the typography all around you, and much of that typography can be truly inspirational. If you're looking to create a type treatment for a magazine layout, a logo, a website or poster, then an image bank of reference images is a useful resource that can kick-start your creative process. Even mundane objects can feature beautiful type treatments…
