Review of an outdoor sign logo

Review of an outdoor sign logo

- Hi everyone, John McWade. The pet superstore, two doors from my local Trader Joe's, is really popular, but that's not because of its logo. Have a look. How does this read to you? Here, look at it in black and white. In black and white you can see that the color value of the gecko and the P are the same. A gecko's cute, but you'd think someone would've noticed that putting it here turns the P into an R and Pets into Rets, incredible Rets. Here it is from a distance. And while we're back here, note how hard it is to make out the word incredible. How does this happen? I don't know. It seems obvious to me. I found this image online, same typefaces, unnatural colors, but there's enough contrast with the gecko that we can read Pets, but by the time it got built into three dimensions and recolored and outlined and put on the wall where it casts a shadow, it just doesn't work. There's the gecko problem, that's the big one, but there are typeface problems, color problems, contrast problems…
