- Magazines come in all shapes and sizes, from oversize magazines like ESPN to undersized magazines like Reader's Digest. I guess I should say that the standard magazine size is roughly eight and a half by 11, technically a little smaller, usually eight and 3/8ths by 10 and 7/8ths. They trim off a little strip to allow images to bleed to the edges, and the standard magazine size is standard because most printing presses handle that natively. So the question for you is what size should your magazine be? For example, a climbing magazine, with tall mountains and panoramic landscapes, suggests an oversize format. And if that's your size, your next question will be is this practical to print, for which you'd need to talk to your printer. Will it cost extra, can you go on a bigger press, whatever the case. If it does cost more, the question then is is the aesthetic of it worth more? One of the things I've noticed with large magazines is that you have a dramatic canvas to work on. You can…
