Stop, look, observe

- The most valuable skill you can develop as a designer, one that will follow you through your entire career, is to train your eyes to look around and see things. Design is everywhere. From the big things, to the small things, and the more you see, the better you'll be. Let me show you a few examples of stuff I look at. I saw this sign, Noodles and Company, on the side of the building the other day, and what caught my eye of course were the concave top and bottom. This is unusual, it's a little bit expensive to do. Noodles itself, the type is kind of nondescript, but I like the concave part of this. A friend of mine looked at this and said it reminded her of perfectly boiled rigatoni. So instead of just flat, dead sides, they had some spring, they had some life, they have the kind of dynamic, and it's surprising, how such a little thing can go a long way in conveying a feel.
