Three tips for good questioning

- Let me share three quick tips that have always helped me plus out my Q&A with a new client. One, don't ask all yes and no questions. Keep the questions open-ended. "Do you have any patents?" turns into "Tell me the story behind your patents." Some clients are a challenge to draw information out of and others barely need a reason to share. Two, come with a list of questions in hand, but don't let that list drive you. An informative conversation never follows a prescribed route. You can tick questions off your list as they get answered without prompts or come back to them if your conversation grinds to a halt. Three, ask the client what they like. Chances are, you're working for them because they've seen your work. Show them various examples of your work, if not. What triggered them to call you? What visually is in the market that they admire or respond to: colors, products, brands of any type? None of this means you'll be imitating a design, but it really gives you window into the…
