- I'm from Kansas, which happens to be the home of Hallmark. You know, the folks that make the cards and the seasonal supplies to support the holidays we celebrate. Aside from creating great products and great jobs for lots of designers, the Hallmark folks had a hand in creating a few of our favorite holidays. We can surely attribute Boss's and Secretaries' Day to them, but they also have been principally involved in the development of Valentine's, Mother's, and Father's Day to boot. But the credit not many are aware of came about in 1917, when they ran out of tissue paper and offered up envelope liner paper to wrap gifts in. Hmmmm. And an industry was born. Who doesn't love a beautifully wrapped package? But what a strange industry! At some point in time people just bought a gift and gave it to the recipient without the intervention of a 2.6 billion dollars worth - that's 85 million tons annually - of pretty paper designed to be torn off and discarded. But there's a reason it works…
