The nameplate: Familiar fonts

- At this point we have four key ingredients. We know the size and the shape of the magazine we'll be designing to. We've also chosen our interior typefaces, which are Miller for our text and Gotham for our sans serif captions. Now it's time to start designing the cover and I think the place to begin is with the nameplate. There are a couple approaches to a nameplate and I'll always encourage you to start by using the text faces that you've chosen for the magazine. So my first attempt at this is just to set Miller. There's Leaf & Mortar in Miller text. We'd like to create some separation between the leaf and the mortar part. To do that we'll turn the Leaf and the ampersand into italic. What you can see are softer, almost viney in fact, there's an organic feel to these, and especially when we add some light coloring. It brings in some earth tones and softens the whole setting and it's very attractive. We can set the whole thing in Gotham. This is Gotham, this is Gotham Bold just typed.…
