- [Instructor] Energy efficiency in buildings has a huge effect on operational costs and environmental impact. Access to natural light is a critical contributor to the quality of occupant experience. Both of these considerations are determined in large part by the relationship between the form of the building and sunlight. The interaction we can test with Grasshopper prototypes. There are a whole category of free Grasshopper plug-ins that support prototyping intended to understand the interactions between building and sunlight. Some examples are Heliotrope, a plug-in that lets you calculate sun angles from locations in specific days in the year. Or Ladybug, a plug-in that lets you import weather data from outside sources to use as inputs for prototyping and optimization. These are a few examples of the many plug-ins available for free commercial use or free educational use. The plug-ins available to Grasshopper are powerful tools that extend Grasshopper capabilities.
