- In this video, I'll delve into Part Two of the backwards planning process, which is all about assessments. At this point in our lesson planning, we've identified what we want our students to know and do by the end of the unit. So now the question is, have they actually achieved these things? How do we know if they've met the requirements of the learning standard? We do this with assessments. There are two main types of assessments you can use in your class: formative and summative. Formative assessments are generally mini assessments given during lessons which allow you to track daily student progress. Summative assessments generally appear at the end of the unit to gauge overall comprehension. Summative assessments can also take the form of performance tasks, which are culminating activities that the student must complete.
