- Hi, I’m William Lidwell and this is “Universal Principles of Design.” In this movie: “Black Effects: “Why Black is Always the New Black.” You may have learned at some point in your education that black and white are not colors. That black is the mere absence of light, and as Newton discovered, white is just a mix of all colored light. From the perspective of the physical world this is correct, but from the perspective of what our brains see, black and white are colors like any other. In fact, from the perspective of what our brains see, black and white are the only true universal colors. Words for black and white exist across all cultures and languages, and in the evolution of language the words for black and white are the most ancient, the most elemental. Long before our evolutionary ancestors could see hues like red, blue, and green, they could see light and dark, white and black. It should come as no surprise, then, that we’ve evolved certain associations for black and white, and…
