Copyright and fair use

- You may have heard the terms copyright and fair use with respect to using information or images. As a researcher or a student, it is vital to take a close look at both of these concepts to better understand how they can impact the research process. Copyright is a protection outlined in Article One, Section Eight of the US Constitution. It protects the legal right of a creator and governs the use of copyrighted material. Title 17 of the US Code gives the owner of copyright the exclusive right to do and to authorize others to do the following: reproduce the work, prepare derivative works, distribute copies, perform the work publicly, display the work publicly. It is illegal to violate the terms of copyright given to the owner of the work. Copyright may be renewed or transferred, so it is always a good idea to check the status of a particular copyright if you have any questions. The United States Copyright Office website is a…
