- [Voiceover] Hi, I'm William Lidwell, and this is the Universal Principles of Design. In this movie, expectation effects, or the power and perils of knowing what's expected. In the national anger and mourning that followed the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, one third grade teacher, far away in Riceville Iowa decided to do something about it. The teacher, Jane Elliot, knew that you couldn't just talk to third graders about what happened, about racism and civil rights, and the assassination. They wouldn't understand it at that age. She needed a way to get the kids to experience the problems in a more concrete way. In a way that they could truly understand. So, she ran a noveled experiment. What is now commonly known as the Blue eyes-Brown eyes exercise, made famous in the documentary The Eye of the Storm.
