- [Voiceover] Hi, I'm Jill Butler, and this the Universal Principles of Design. In this movie, freeze-flight-fight-forfeit, or Designing With Stress in Mind. On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 suffered total engine failure shortly after takeoff due to a bird strike. The plane ditches in the Hudson River, and it will sink in 24 minutes. The crew directs passengers to evacuate. Some panic and jump into the frigid waters of the Hudson River, and some congregate on the wings. They seem to freeze, as if stuck in a loop, assessing whether to stay, swim to a rescue vehicle, or attempt to swim to shore. As the cabin fills with water from the back of the plane, a number of passengers remain in their seats paralyzed with fear. One passenger attempts to exit through a rear emergency door. When the aft crew member intervenes, the passenger becomes aggressive. Fortunately, the well-designed emergency procedures and a well-trained crew are able to address this range of responses.
