How to cite

- So you know you need to use citations. How do you go about creating them? There are many different citation styles, which sometimes are specific to the field you may be studying. For example, work in the Humanities often uses MLA, or the Modern Language Association, style of citation. Some others that you may come across are APA, or American Psychological Association, Chicago, Turabian, and more. Refer to the style guides themselves for specific information about the formatting for your type of paper. As for the actual citations you write, the difference between styles is mostly just detail. The order in which the data appears, the syntax, are items italicized? Things like that. Some styles use footnotes, or end notes, and some do not. Try not to get bogged down in the minutia. If your professor has stated a preference, just follow that format and make sure your citations are consistent. The most important thing citations do is lead you back to a source.
