- When talking about social media we should first attempt to define it. Author Reynol Junco in the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning states that social media is quote, "A collection of internet websites, "services, and practices that support collaboration, "community building, participation and sharing." The Pew research center released a study in 2013 about the habits of internet users and social media and finds that social media is particularly popular with adults ages 18 to 29, and that some of the predominate networks being used today are Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and Tumblr. Of course, this is a continually changing landscape as new products become popular or fall out of favor. When these sites were first gaining visibility they were widely seen as diversions or entertainment. A place to post what you had for dinner that night, or the latest cat video.
