- As a former elementary school teacher, I know that first graders are now being asked to respond to ever more sophisticated assessments. Instead of simple questions from Dick and Jane like where did Jane run? They're getting questions like evaluate the author's purpose in this story. For this reason many more students will require scaffolds in order to be successful with these complex reading prompts. I've spent a lot of time thinking about the kind of scaffolds that can help students respond to complex reading tasks. The first reading scaffold that I find extremely helpful is a template. Here's an example of how I use a template scaffold when teaching second graders cause and effects. For the cause and effect lesson, I wanted students to identify cause and effect events within a fictional story.
