Scoring criteria for both essays
- [Voiceover] So, the GRE tells us the criteria it uses to score essays, but those criteria are fairly brief, and unfortunately, somewhat abstract. Fortunately, at ETS has published several sample essay responses, along with greater commentary, from which we can discern what graders like and what they don't like. In this video, I'll talk about the criteria that essay graders use to understand what kind of writing will be rewarded. So, I'll start by showing you what the GRE says are the characteristics of the highest scoring responses. And these characteristics are the same for both essay tests. So, the GRE says that high-scoring responses sustain insightful, in-depth analysis of complex ideas. They develop and support main points with logically compelling reasons, and/or highly persuasive examples. They are well-focused and well-organized, they skillfully use sentence variety and precise vocabulary to convey meaning effectively, and they demonstrate superior facility with sentence…
