- Hi, I'm William Lidwell and this is Universal Principles of Design. In this movie, White Effects, why good guys wear white. Associations of the color white with moral goodness are ubiquitous in popular culture. In the classic cowboy westerns, with the likes of Rory Rogers and The Lone Ranger, we discern the good guys from the bad by the color of their hats. White is good, black is bad. The modern hacker terms, white hat and black hat, derived from this tradition. The same is true in many religions, where benevolent gods, angels, and prophets, are associated with light, and are often depicted draped in light-colored clothes. This should not be surprising since in the evolution of our ability to perceive color, the color white, along with black, is the most ancient. Long before our evolutionary ancestors could see hues like red, blue, and green, they could see light and dark, white and black.
