- [Instructor] The two times I can think a Windows restart is necessary are to complete the installation of software or an upgrade, or when you're trying to troubleshoot some issue. A quick option for troubleshooting is just to sign out of Windows and then sign back in again. So, from the Start menu, you're going to choose your little avatar, the icon over here. And choose Sign out from the menu. Windows stops all your programs and turns off user-specific features. If a program has run amok, it will be killed, though Windows may prompt you to manually stop the program. And eventually, you sign in again. If the problem is fixed, great. Otherwise, you must restart the system and you must restart the system to install software, perform a system upgrade, so signing in or out will not do it.
