- [Instructor] The address resolution protocol, or ARP, is used to translate between IP addresses and Mac addresses on the local network. Now you're already familiar with DNS, which translates between domain names and IP addresses. You can think of ARP as the local network equivalent that allows machines to find each other's Mac addresses so that they can communicate over ethernet. ARP only works on local networks where all the systems are communicating over ethernet. The ARP command allows you to display the ARP information stored by your system. This usually includes the contents of the ARP cache, letting you know what information the local system is using to communicate on the local network. I'm going to use the ARP minus a command to display the contents of that ARP cache on my MacBook. And what you see here are the IP address and Mac address associations that this system has already learned just by observing traffic on…
