- [Instructor] Jurisdictions around the nation and the world are now frequently passing new privacy laws. These laws might cover new industries, new elements of information, or new jurisdictions. As privacy professionals, we are often called upon to read and interpret these privacy laws, determining how they apply to our own organizations. When analyzing a new law, one of the first things that a privacy professional should do is determine the jurisdiction of the law. This is done by reading the law itself and also assessing the power of the body that created the law. While this might seem straightforward, interpreting privacy laws is fairly complex. For example, when the European Union first passed the General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR, the law stated that it applied to the personal information of EU residents worldwide.
