- [Instructor] While we can configure a VPN server on nearly any host running a major operating system, there's another approach to setting up a VPN server as well. Some manufacturers sell appliances or standalone dedicated devices that act as VPN hosts. Because of the encryption resources and network bandwidth that VPN requires, it can make sense to move this overhead off of a router or server and onto a purpose-built piece of hardware. They take care of the encryption, the encapsulation, and the tunnel creation, and then they release the traffic from remote hosts onto the protected network. This can also help to reduce the maintenance and upkeep that a manually-configured VPN server might require. These dedicated devices are often called VPN concentrators or security gateways and they can be configured to host the security information for a connection and to connect to a directory that's used to authenticate users.
