- [Narrator] The Cable Communications Policy Act of 1984 implemented many policies affecting cable television providers. Like many of the laws that I've discussed in this course, privacy is only a small component of the law. But it is the component that we're interested in discussing. Let's look at the privacy provisions that apply to cable television providers. Cable system operators are prohibited from using their systems to collect personally identifiable information from customers without obtaining prior consent, unless this information is necessary to provide cable service, or detect unauthorized use of the service. When cable system operators do collect personally identifiable information, they may not disclose that information unless they're required to do so to provide service to the subscriber.
