- That problem of someone's good name being stolen is an awful problem for today's victims of financial fraud. But not all identity theft is about finances. Impersonation can involve all the things you learned about in spoofing, including deepfakes and voice cloning. Having a deepfake made of you can be a quite disconcerting experience. These technologies break some very deep-seated assumptions. Do you think Groucho Marx ever said, "Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes?" No, it was Chico. He was being ironic. But technology has caught up with irony. It's always been reasonable to say, "I heard Adam say", because faking that was hard. We're going to need to adjust our expectations of what we can believe.
