Clean up digital SSN stores
- [Instructor] Eliminating business processes is only part of the equation for tidying up past uses of PII in your organization. You also need to seek out and destroy PII that was part of those eliminated business processes. This is difficult and time consuming work. So why should you do it? Large amounts of PII don't really ever expire. Think about stores of old social security numbers. If the data subjects are still alive, those numbers are still valid. If you don't eliminate those legacy stores of SSNs, you'll create a risk that may continue to exist for many years. More dangerously, people might forget about those old stores of SSNs and discard a drive containing them or subject them to conditions where they might be exposed in a data breach.
